Arod Lake Description

Arod Lake is a state fishing access site located in northwest Montana. One of the region's several wildlife preserves, the Arod Lakes Waterfowl Production Area is worth getting off the beaten path to visit. The 800-acre unit is located about 15 miles northeast of Choteau. Established in 1993 when land was purchased from area farmers, the waterfowl production area encircles three main lakes and several smaller ponds and canals. The main lake is dubbed Arod Lake while the other two larger bodies are Middle and Round lakes. The primary management goal for the area is to provide breeding and migration habitat for migratory birds. Secondarily, the preserve is designed to provide year-round recreational opportunities for bird-watching, game and bird hunting and fishing. Wildlife using the preserve include a vast variety of waterfowl, ring-necked pheasants, gray partridge and mule and white-tailed deer. The area also enjoys large concentrations of snow geese in the spring of the year and high numbers of ring-billed and California gulls. Double-crested cormorant, Canada geese and white pelicans nest each spring on several islands on the main lake. Boating may also be enjoyed on the lake. There is a boat launch for carry-in or 4-wheel drive trailer launching. Camping is permitted and toilets are available. 14 day stay limit. Arod Lake is located 1 mile east of Choteau on Secondary 221, 6 miles north on Secondary 220, 5 miles east on County Road, then 6 miles north on County Road.
